Weddings in Gran Canaria

Spain is becoming one of the most popular destinations for weddings, attracting couples with its beautiful scenery and reliable weather. Couples can get married in stunning backdrops provided by cliff tops, beaches, castles and spa resorts. If you are a non–resident Gran Canaria is currently only one of two places you are able to get married (the other being north Costa Blanca) – and only through the help of wedding planners.

You are able to have a religious Roman Catholic wedding that is legally recognised in the U.K and the U.S. It will be conducted by a Spanish priest and Banns may be read out in the church in the run up to the wedding.

As recently as 2009, to have a civil wedding, one or both individuals needed to be resident in Spain for at least 6 months and registered on the local Padron (a record of local residents held at the town hall) in the area you planned to get married. In September 2009 the first legal civil wedding for non-residents took place in Gran Canaria. Currently Gran Canaria Weddings and Celebrations SLU are the only groups allowed to organise legally binding weddings for non-resident couples.

Wedding Blessings are the most popular option for many couples. It allows greater flexibility in location and style as they can be held pretty much anywhere and uses any kind of celebrant. It is not a legally recognised ceremony and a legal ceremony must be held in your home country either before or after the blessing. They can look exactly like a legal wedding and unless the guests are informed they may not even realise that it is a blessing, rather than a wedding.

There are many top class hotels in which to hold your wedding and/or reception. Popular choices include the Gloria Palace Amadores, located on a cliff top with stunning views of the Atlantic and Tenerife. The Cordial Mogan Playa hotel in Puerto Mogan has grounds in a Canaria style village with a beautiful chapel able to accommodate up to 40 people. The Lopesan Baobab Resort with its exotic African theme and the Princess Hotel both in Maspalomas are other popular resorts for weddings. Themed weddings such as a Vegas style wedding or a wedding at sea are other options. Same sex weddings are also available. Bows and Ribbons are a company that can answer all your questions about organising a same sex wedding.

If you are thinking of researching venues in Gran Canaria as a possible wedding venue booking a cheap holiday in Maspalomas is a great place to start. Gran Canaria is an island so the only real option for getting there is by air. There is a ferry service form Fuerteventura but this is only for people making a day trip to the island. The airport is about 18kms from Las Palmas and serves a large number of flights from the Europe and further afield. Airlines that provide flights between Gran Canaria and the U.K and mainland Spain are Futura, Iberia, Spanair and Excel. There is plenty of public transport available from the airport but your chosen hotel is also likely to provide free shuttle services to and from the airport. Gran Canaria Weddings and Celebrations SL is the only legally registered wedding business on the island
